For those who enjoy a smoke with dinner or drinks, Prince George's County is no longer a dining out option. The county's smoking ban took effect Friday, making it illegal to light up in public eating and drinking establishments. The cigar bar at FedEx Field and private fraternal clubs like the Elks Lodge, the American Legion and VFW halls are exempt. Violators could face fines of up to $200 and business owners could be fined $1,000 for failing to enforce it. The county Health Department said it was working with restaurants and bars to post signs at entrances informing customers of the ban and to enforce the penalties. The ban is similar to one enacted in 2003 in neighboring Montgomery County. Restaurant industry groups contend that antismoking laws hurt businesses by driving away smokers. However, the Prince George's County Council approved the ban in November after reviewing a two-year report showing that Montgomery's ban did not hurt businesses. The report found that patronage at bars and restaurants actually increased, based on tax revenue and employment figures.
