The only no-kill animal shelter in Montgomery County just closed its doors. And re-opening could cause a bit of a cat-fight.
This pretty kitty is one of the lucky ones. She has people interested in taking her home. Too many face a far worse fate in a county that takes in twice as many cats as dogs.
For more than a decade, good cats that failed to snag a family at this shelter got a second shot from the Montgomery County SPCA. They'd live here or with a foster family until they found a home.
But a month ago, volunteers got word the shelter was shutting down because the former managers wanted to focus on spay/neuter and catch and release program.
So the group reincorporated as the 'New' Montgomery County SPCA was intent on taking over the building, but was unable to get access to it.
Even if they did, running a shelter is a tough business. A love of animals is a good start but these guys need food, medical care and adoption screening just for starters.
It's going to take quite a bit of the one thing the SPCA-hopefuls don't have, money. But the volunteers plan to scratch and claw their way out of this mess for the ones they've already saved and the ones that still need them.
