The Prince George's County police officer shot during a Laurel traffic stop has died.

Officer Steve Gaughan died late this afternoon.

County Executive Jack Johnson made the announcement outside PG Hospital, calling it a sad day. That sentiment was echoed by Police Chief Melvin High, who says it's been a "long and difficult day." It started around 11 o'clock, Tuesday morning on Route-197, when authorities say Gaughan and three colleagues, all undercover, pulled over a car. But one man got out and opened fire.

Despite wearing a bulletproof vest, police say Gaughan was hit at least twice in the arm and abdomen.

Gaughan leaves a wife and two children. He was 41-years old and spent 18-years on the PG force. The alleged gunman was shot by police and remains hospitalized. Two other suspects are in custody. Click on video to see related reports.
