Audrey Barnes' report
Local filmmaker Gerardine Wurzburg spent countless hours with Sue Rubin, an autistic woman who cannot speak, to try and give her a voice.
Her documentary called "Autism Is a World" has now been nominated for an Academy Award.
Actress Julianna Margulies is Sue's voice in the documentary.
Up until the age of 13 everyone thought Sue was retarded. Her speech therapist used a technique called facilitated communication, letting Sue type her words and her entire world changed.
Wurzburg produced and directed this incredible work at state of the arts productions in DC, and now she's Oscar bound.
Saks Fifth Avenue in Chevy Chase has outfitted her in Armani for the big night.
Wurzburg already has one Oscar on her shelf for a documentary she produced about a boy with Downs Syndrome.
She's hoping Sue's story will land her another one.
For a filmmaker, few things can top an Academy award but Wurzburg will be the first to tell you for her it?s not about the accolades it's about changing lives.
Wurzburg's documentary 'Autism is a World' will premiere on CNN Presents on May 22nd.
The Academy Awards show is February 27th; we'll let you know what happens.
