Is a dog drug designed to prevent heartworm also behind the deaths, of hundreds of family pets? It's possible and now, a panel of experts is making some recommendations.

The drug experts are concerned about is called "ProHeart 6." It's no longer on the market and the company that makes it pulled it off the shelves in September.

ProHeart 6 is an alternative to the Heartworm Pills and was a similar drug given at the vet's office by injection.

The drug-maker, Fort Dodge Animal Health, pulled an independent panel together, to look into the allegations that ProHeart 6 could be deadly.

That panel found that there is no direct correlation between the dog deaths, and ProHeart.

Nine News reporter Jennifer Ryan spoke with veterinarians at the Friendship Animal Hospital in Bethesda on Monday. They say they used ProHeart 6 when it was on the market and saw no bad side effects, or animal deaths.

However, if your dog was given ProHeart 6 your veterinarian should have told you about it by now. And since the drug is off the market your vet can't give it to your dog.
