An accident in Anne Arundel county Tuesday claimed the life of a Maryland Transportation Authority officer.

Colleagues describe Officer Duke Aaron as the "best of the best."

The accident happened on Route 50 near St. Margaret's Lane and Cape St. Claire Road and snarled traffic for hours.

Twenty-nine-year-old officer Duke Aaron, III died doing what he does best; helping others.

The ten year veteran of the Maryland Transportation Authority police force was hit by a car while working an accident on Route 50 near St. Margaret's Lane.

Maryland Transportation Authority Chief, Gary McLHinney says, "He had just returned to his vehicle after issuing a citation."

Aaron suffered massive head injuries and a cardiac arrest. He was revived briefly but died later at shock trauma.

"Other officers from transportation authorty are here now...our focus is with the officer's family," McLHinney said.

Co-workers say officer Aaron has been in on some dramatic rescues during his decade on the force.

He recently saved a woman who tried to take her life on the Bay Bridge.

Officer Aaron is the fourth Maryland Transportation Authority police officer to die in the line of duty.

Charges are pending against the driver who hit him.

Officer Aaron leaves behind a wife. His father-in-law recently retired from the department.
