Newport News man arrested for intentionally transmitting HIV

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- A Newport News man has been charged and arrested on Tuesday for spreading a sexually transmitted disease intentionally.

Andre Leaphart, 40, of Argall Place has been charged with sexual battery with intent to transmit infection.

The victim, a Hampton man, claims he contracted the disease, and the alleged offender knew he was infected.

According to reports the two men were in a relationship from January of 2016 to March of 2017.

According to court documents, the victim claims they engaged in unprotected sexual activities with Leaphart who did not disclose he was HIV positive.

The victim found 2015 prescriptions for HIV medications with Leaphart's name on March of 2017.

Leaphart will appear in court on July 11, and is currently being held in Newport News City Jail without bond.
