Truck with $2M in gold and silver crashes on highway

CHEEKTOWAGA, NY -- A Uhaul truck carrying $2 million dollars worth of gold and silver crashed on the New York Thruway in Cheektowaga Monday morning, state police said.

The left lane of the thruway in the eastbound direction was temporarily closed while state police secured the scene, and offloaded the contents of the truck into an armored vehicle.

The driver in the crash was not injured, and state police say he was a government contracted transport.

State police say the cargo consisted of large mechanical filter-like cores used in military aircraft, which contain amounts of gold and silver.
