Prom-date denial investigated in school killing

MILFORD, Conn. (AP) - A 16-year-old boy is in custody in Connecticut, in the stabbing death of a 16-year-old girl at a high school this morning -- and officials are trying to find out whether he attacked her because she turned down his invitation to the prom.

Maren Sanchez was stabbed in a hallway of Jonathan Law High school in Milford this morning. Police say staff members and paramedics tried to save her life, but she was pronounced dead at a hospital.

A girl who says she was one of the slain girl's best friends says students were gathered in an auditorium when a teacher came and told them her friend had been stabbed. Imani Langston says the teacher reported that the girl "got stabbed in the throat for saying no about going to prom."

She says Sanchez and the boy who's accused of stabbing her were friends, but had never dated. She also says Sanchez had helped to organize the junior prom, and was looking forward to attending with her boyfriend.

The prom was supposed to take place tonight, but it's been postponed.
