Police: Grandmother let 3-year-old steer car, crash it

ORLANDO, Fla. (WESH) -- Police have arrested an Orlando, Florida grandmother accused of letting a 3-year-old steer a car in an parking lot Sunday.

The car crashed into several parked cars at The Serrano apartments.

A witness told police he heard a crash in the parking lot and saw a gold, four-door Chrysler crash head-on into a parked vehicle and then back into another vehicle.

The witness said he could clearly see the child standing on the lap of 47-year-old Volanda Cousar, steering the car.

The witness confronted the woman so she couldn't flee.

"He was in the front seat of her car," the man said. "He was sitting in her lap. Her hands were not on the wheel."

"I asked her, 'What are you thinking?'" the man said.

Cousar has been charged with child abuse and careless driving.

The 3-year-old was visiting from New Jersey with his family. His mother took him back home, and the Department of Children and Families is coordinating with New Jersey officials to make sure he is safe.
