Pedestrian killed while trying to save dog

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A pedestrian was hit and killed by a vehicle Tuesday night after investigators said he tried to catch his dog that had gotten off a leash.

The accident happened just after 9:30 p.m. in the 8600 block of Nussbaum, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Police say Joseph B. Willbanks, 35, was trying to catch his dog when he ran out in front of an oncoming vehicle.

Willbanks was taken to UF Health Jacksonville where he was pronounced dead.

Police are investigating, but so far haven't made any arrests.
