Neighbor helps jogger attacked by 2 pit bulls

HOUSTON (KHOU) —Birds chirping and the occasional runner passing by is what you typically hear along the South Belt hike and bike trail.

But the peace was shattered Wednesday morning by an alarming sound.

"I thought it was some kid on the walking trail screaming as they rode their bike," said Sharon Jordan. "It kept going and wouldn't go away."

So Jordan asked her husband Charles to take a look behind their home.

That's when he saw the woman being attacked by pit bulls.

"They were playing tug of war with her," said Jordan. "One was pulling this way and the other was pulling that way, trying to tear her apart."

Then Jordan took action.

"I ran down there and dove on top of her. That's all I could do. Just put myself between her and the dog," said Charles Jordan.

He said the struggle felt like an eternity. One of the dogs bit him in the mouth.

"I'm fine. The dogs didn't want me. They were fixated on her," said Charles Jordan.

After about 10 minutes, the dogs left. 911 had been called and paramedics were on the way.

"I put my arms around her and told her you're safe and nothing else is going to happen to you today," shared Charles Jordan.

The victim, Monica Garza, was rushed to the hospital for surgery. One of the responding EMT's was a close family friend of the victim.

"I didn't recognize she was wet and bloody," said Miguel Cantu. "She recognized me and said, please help me."

The dogs were seized by animal control where they will be quarantined for 10 days. Authorities have spoken with the owner of one of the dogs. They're still trying to reach the owner of the other one.

The victim is expected to make a full recovery. Her father believes she had a guardian angel looking out for her.

"I firmly believe he saved her life by risking his," said Jeff Mack.

But Jordan insists he is not a hero.

"She's too young," said Jordan. "Young people don't need to be hurt. I've got kids. I've got grand kids. Don't hurt them."
