Thousands Cheer Vets And RGIII At Memorial Day Parade

WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- Thousands of people took time out from barbecues to commemorate Memorial Daywith an old fashioned parade.

This is only the eighth year for the DC's National Memorial DayParade down Constitution Avenue.

For nearly 70 years, there was no Memorial Day parade in the nation's capital. But as Memorial Day parades in other cities have dwindled, the DC parade has grown.

Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin, III was a grand marshal. He said it wasn't about him, it was about his mom and dad, who both served in the US Army, and about the parents who did not come home to their families.

Nearly 200 marching bands, military units, youth groups and floats rolled past from 7th Street down Constitution and by the White House in the parade.
