Man fatally kills self after shooting wife in Mass.

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) - Police have identified the suspect involved in Tuesday night's standoff with police at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield.

Police said Eddie Bonafe, 54, of West Springfield shot and killed himself after a tense, four-hour standoff at the hospital.

Shortly after midnight is when police said Bonafe turned the gun on himself. He was rushed inside to the trauma unit but died shortly after.

Police said it all stemmed from an argument between Bonafe and his wife inside their car in South Hadley.

They said the argument continued into West Springfield on Piper Road.

Police tell CBS 3 that at first the woman who was shot thought she was in a car accident and called 911, but police said Bonafe had shot her.

Her husband ended up taking her to Baystate with a gunshot wound. Emergency personnel were called out to the car, the woman was treated and is expected to be OK.

That's when police said Bonafe took out a gun and sat in his red Fiat with it to his head, distraught over the shooting.

Dozens of state and Springfield law enforcement surrounded the Emergency Room at Baystate to stabilize the situation.

Hospital officials and police said that at no point were any other patients or hospital staff in any danger.

Springfield police said that Bonafe is known to the West Springfield Police Department, but would not comment on his history.

His wife is talking with Springfield police officers.
