(WUSA) -- If you were able to stay up late Thursday night and look into the sky, then you may have seen some streaks of light.

What you saw were from the Geminid meteor shower, which happens every December. The shower got its name because it appears to come from the constellation Gemini.

It was the first time the comet Wirtanen's debris field has crossed the earth's orbit. According to NASA, it may have created some of the meteors.

Thursday night was the peak of the Geminid meteor shower.
