WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- Soul, jazz and R & B singer Maysa just released her 10th studio album. It's called "Blue Velvet Soul."
The song "Pouring Rain" from the album, made it onto our partners at USA Today's playlist. The reviewer says "The R&B chanteuse brings a perfect mix of cool and warmth to this quiet storm, included on Blue Velvet Soul."
Earlier this year, Maysa sang at a tribute for Stevie Wonder and WUSA 9's Andrea Roane said she "knocked the socks off of everyone" with her great voice.
Maysa's big break actually came when she auditioned with Stevie Wonder. He had come to do a Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration and Maysa's best friend was singing with them. Wonder was looking for an alto voice and he let her audition. She moved to California a year later because she wanted to finish her degree. "When I was in California I got to audition for Incognito," says Maysa. Maysa has done about a dozen albums with the band Incognito.
Maysa is also from our area. She is Baltimore born. She is also classically trained, which she says has kept her on top for more than two decades.
"I think it's because -- it's just the support that you need. I think anybody's who's getting into the music industry should have some kind of training, whether with a vocal teacher you need the support just like anybody, athlete have to train, vocalists have to train too," explained Maysa.
Maysa is on tour in our area in Baltimore June 29, and will return in September. Otherwise you'll see her in London and all over Europe the rest of the year.
