UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (WUSA) -- Maryland State Police describe a gruesome scene early Saturday morning on the outer loop of the beltway in Upper Marlboro.
The police investigation indicates that shortly after 1:45 a.m., a woman driving a 2004 Chrysler Sebring, with MD tags # 79552CE, lost control of the vehicle south of Ritchie Marlboro Road at mile marker 13.
Investigators say the vehicle struck the center median guardrail and came to rest on the left shoulder. Officers say the driver exited the car and walked in the roadway of I-495 where she was struck by several cars that continued on their way.
State troopers say the body of the woman was "destroyed beyond recognition" but that they have been able to identify the victim and notify next of kin.
Investigators also indicated that there was a car seat in the car but that no child was inside the car at the time of the incident.
The outer loop was closed for hours but has since reopened. The investigation continues.
