WALDORF, Md. (WUSA9) -- A Virginia man is charged with robbery and endangering a child after allegedly stealing an 80-year-old woman's purse in Waldorf, Md. and fleeing from the scene with his two-year-old son standing up in the back seat of his car.
According to Charles County Sheriff's Office authorities, an 80-year-old woman was leaving a grocery store in the 3200 block of Crain Highway when a male, later identified as 22-year-old Larry Jamal Fortune of Fairfax, Va. pulled her purse away from her hands. He struggled with the woman at first, say police, but then got the purse and fled in a white Chrysler 300.
Authorities say an officer tried to stop the vehicle on Crain Highway, but stopped pursuing the vehicle after he spotted a small boy standing up, unrestrained in the backseat. Detectives learned the child was Fortune's 2-year-old son.
According to authorities, detectives later found the car in D.C. The child was found safe in the custody of a relative, say authorities.
Fortune was taken into custody on Tuesday and charged with robbery, assault, theft, endangering a child, and multiple traffic violations, say authorities.
