Man found dead behind New Carrollton apartment building ID'd

NEW CARROLLTON, Md. (WUSA9) -- Police are investigating a homicide at an apartment building on Riverdale Road on Tuesday.

According to New Carrollton City Police, officers responded to a call regarding gunshots and a person down at approximately 3:50 a.m. Tuesday in the 7800 block of Riverdale Road. When they arrived, they found a man on the grass behind an apartment building suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

Emergency medical personnel pronounced the man dead. Police have identified the victim as 24-year-old Damato Anthony Coates of Carters Grove Place in Silver Spring, Md.

The Prince George's County Police Department Homicide unit is now conducting an investigation. At this time, they do not believe the shooting was random. they are working to establish a motive and identify a suspect or suspects.
