Man accused of attempted robbery after returns denied

LAUREL, Md. (WUSA9) -- A man trying to return items to Walmart threatened an employee with a weapon and tried to get cash after the returns were denied, say Anne Arundel County Police. That man, identified by police as 41-year-old Shahzad M. Iqbal of Laurel, now faces several charges including attempted robbery.

Police say they responded to the Walmart in the 3500 block of Russett Green Ease in Laurel at 10:57 p.m. Monday for the report of a person with a gun. At the store, they spoke with an employee who told them she was at the customer service counter when a man approached her and attempted to return a used electronic tablet device. She told officers his request was refused because he did not have a receipt. According to the employee, the man then took a pair of headphones off of his head and asked to return them as well. His request was denied again for the same reason.

Police tell us that's when the man reportedly placed a backpack on the counter, took out what looked like a black sub-compact machine gun, and pointed it at the employee. He demanded money but the employee yelled and he fled through the front door without any money.

Officer later located Iqbal walking away from the store and he was taken into custody. Police say the weapon was found in his backpack and determined to be a CO² BB gun.

Iqbal was charged with Attempt Robbery, Attempt First Degree Assault and Possession of CDS, say police.
