Woman killed by dump-truck in Arlington

ARLINGTON (WUSA9) -- A woman was killed after being hit by a dump truck in Va. on Monday morning, police said.

Jennifer Lawson, 39, of Arlington, was hit by the truck as she tried to put her child into a minivan at around 11:30 a.m. on the 5900 block of Little Falls Road, police said.

"You're inches away from traffic, you're sometimes not aware of how close you are to standing in harms way," said John Townsend of AAA Mid-Atlantic.

He added, "A lot of people load their cars or put their kids in the car on the drivers side and they're facing traffic and they only have inches to spare and there's no margin or room for error."

Authorities are investigating whether there was fault or it was a tragic accident. The driver of the commercial dump truck is said to be cooperating with the investigation that includes determining how fast the truck was going and where exactly Lawson was standing.

The collision happened on North Little Falls Parkway in front of Nottingham Elementary School.

Lawson was rushed to Fairfax Hospital by the Arlington County Fire Department where she died from her injuries, police said.

Police are asking that anyone with any information regarding this accident contact Arlington County Police Detective Mohammed Tabibi at (703) 228-4618, or at Mtabibi@arlingtonva.us .
