1 dead after unmarked police car hits scooter in Silver Spring

WHEATON, MD. (WUSA9) - One person has died after police say an unmarked Montgomery County police car hit a motor scooter Wednesday night in the Wheaton area. 

The accident happened around  9:43 p.m. at Veirs Mill Road and Norris Drive. 

It was first reported by police that the person operating the scooter was seriously injured. Police later reported that the person had died as a result of the crash. 

The investigation shows that 74-year-old Loreto Andal Canubas was operating the Sunra Motor Scooter southbound on Monterrey Drive at Veirs Mill Road and tried to cross over Veirs Mill Road. After he crossed into the westbound lanes and went into the eastbound lanes, the scooter and unmarked Montgomery County Police cruiser crashed in the eastbound lanes of Veirs Mill Road. 

Police said the unmarked cruiser was being driven by Montgomery County Police Officer Robert Farmer. 

The crash remains under investigation.
