Wells wants Fire Chief, Deputy Mayor to quit

WASHINGTON (WUSA) -- D.C. Council member Tommy Wells is calling for the resignations of the city's deputy mayor for public safety and the fire chief.

Wells says the fire department suffers from what he calls systemic mismanagement and a record of failure. And he points to the case of Cecil Mills.

Last month, Mills had a heart attack and collapsed across the street from a D.C. fire house. He died at the hospital. An internal investigation said five firefighters knew Mills needed help, but none came forward.

A spokesman for Mayor Gray says Councilman Wells is 'pulling a shameless political stunt.'

On Twitter, Jack Evans, Democratic candidate for DC Mayor said "As mayor I would hire a new fire chief and get to the crux of the management problem. This can be fixed."
