Va. police: Man, 24, dead in single-vehicle crash

LORTON, Va. (WUSA9) -- Fairfax County Police Department is investigating a single-vehicle crash that left a 24-year-old man dead early Saturday morning in Lorton.

Police said the accident happened around 4:18 a.m. in the Lorton area, when Juan Gomez, 24, of the Lorton area was driving a 2001 Volkswagen Jetta. According to authorities, he was going eastbound on Pohick Road just past the Lorton Station. Gomez was speeding and lost control of the vehicle, police said. He ended up off the road and hit a tree on the passenger side.

According to authorities, a person close by heard the crash and contacted police.

Gomez was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Authorities said, it is not clear at this point if alcohol was a factor in the accident, however speed was. In addition, Gomez was not wearing his seatbelt.
