OPAL, VA. (WUSA9) - A man and the mother have been charged with abuse and neglect of children after a two-year-old boy accidentally shot a four-year-old girl inside of a car over the weekend in Fauquier County, officials said.
The shooting happened on Friday night while the car was parked at the Quarles Truck Stop in Opal located in the 9700 block of James Madison Highway, Fauquier County Sheriff's Office said.
Officials said two adults and three children made a pit stop at the shop. The adults left the children alone inside of the car in the parking lot.
A two-year-old boy got hold of an unsecured firearm and then accidentally discharged it and hit a four-year-old girl in the upper body. After returning to the car, the adults did not get any proper medical treatment from the girl's serious injury, officials stated.
According to the sheriff's office, the children and adults were found later that night in Westmoreland County, Virginia. The injured child was taken to the trauma center. The girl was treated and released. The other child involved was not hurt.
Isaiah Marshall Davis, 26, of Winchester, Va. has been charged with one count of abuse and neglect of children a class 4 felony; two counts of abuse and neglect of children a class 6 felony; reckless handling of a firearm and allowing access to a firearm by children. He is currently in custody of the Northern Neck Regional Jail.
The mother, Destinie Rochelle Beach, 21, of Stephens City, VA recently turned herself in. She is being charged with abuse and neglect of children and possession/transport of a firearm by a non-violent felon.
