Fuel spill cleanup on Elizabeth River continues

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - Crews are working this weekend to clean up a fuel spill from a bulk carrier on the Elizabeth River.

The Coast Guard says the 740-foot carrier Ostria S was refueling at the Norfolk Southern Coal Pier at Lambert's Point on Friday when its tanks overflowed, spilling an undetermined amount of fuel onto the ship's deck and into the water.

Petty Officer 1st Class Brandyn Hill says a 4,000-foot boom was placed around the ship. He says a spill response company resumed cleanup work on Saturday morning.

Hill says the Coast Guard is investigating the cause of the spill and is monitoring cleanup efforts.
