1 dead in Va. after car runs off road, crashes into tractor trailer

FRANCONIA, VA. (WUSA9) - One person is dead after a car ran off the road and then crashed into the back off a tractor trailer early Thursday morning in the Franconia area. 

The crash happened around 3:36 a.m. along the westbound lanes of I-495 near Exit 173 Van Dorn Ave. A tractor trailer was stopped off the shoulder when a 2013 Honda Civic ran off the road and crashed into the back of it. 

Virginia State police said the driver of the tractor trailer pulled over onto the right shoulder due to some mechanical issues. He walked around to inspect the vehicle and then hopped back into the tractor trailer. Authorities stated he was just about to pull off when the crash happened. 

The driver of the car died at the scene. He has been identified as Christopher S. Padilla, 30, of Alexandria, Va. The driver of the tractor trailer was not hurt. 

Virginia State police said the driver of the car died at the scene of the crash. 

Police continue to investigate the crash.
