Mistrial declared in MPD officer attempted murder

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (WUSA9) -- A mistrial has been declared in the case of a Metropolitan Police Department officer indicted for attempting to kill his wife.

Officer Samson Lawrence was indicted for attempted murder after authorities say he hit his wife in the head with a metal lamp post during an incident on November 24, 2013. Samson's wife says he then held her against her will at knife point.

After deliberating for seven hours, the jury in the case was deadlocked and could not come to a unanimous decision beyond a reasonable doubt, so the judge declared the mistrial.

The State's Attorney's Office says they are surprised and disappointed but not discouraged as they plan to retry the officer for attempted murder.

Two hearings will go before the judge on Friday. The first will be to determine whether or not Lawrence violated an order requiring him to stay away from his wife, the other to set a new trial date so the State's Attorney can retry the case.
