COLLEGE PARK, Md. (WUSA9) -- The Byrd Stadium at the University of Maryland is one step closer to getting a new name. The student government voted overwhelmingly to support renaming the stadium.
It's currently named after Harry Clifton Byrd, who was university president from 1936 to 1954. A coalition of students has been petitioning for a new name. They point out during Byrd's tenure, he barred blacks from participating in sports and enrolling into the university until 1951.
