UMD faculty members speak up after campus murder

COLLEGE PARK, MD (WUSA9) - Second Lieutenant Richard Collins III will be laid to rest on Friday.

He's the young man murdered on campus at the University of Maryland this weekend -- in a possible hate crime.

Students have called for change. And now some faculty members are speaking up.

One faculty member at the University of Maryland posted a video on YouTube to share his thoughts.

Dr. Rashawn Ray works as an associate professor in the sociology department at the University of Maryland. He told WUSA9 Collins' death is an important topic to discuss.

"Anytime a person is murdered because of their race or their gender, sexual orientation or any other identity, it's something we need to focus on."
