WASHINGTON (WUSA9) - Three murders in just four days have parts of upper Northwest D.C. under heavy police state presence. Detectives are stepping up patrols in hopes of getting a handle on the shootings investigators believe are gang related.
“I don’t know. I’m a working man. I stay off these streets,” said one man waiting for a bus outside Lucky’s Corner Market Thursday evening.
Just before midnight Wednesday, 22-year-old Jonathan Vilchez was killed inside Lucky's on Georgia Avenue and Kennedy Street, NW. Mario Alfaro, 23, was found shot about a block away, police added. He was later arrested and charged with second-degree murder.
Both guns were recovered.
“I see police here all the time, when I come home from work and stop by here to go to the store. I see them here all the time,” said the man.
Police are stepping up patrols at the crime scenes, including over at 1300 Rittenhouse Street, NW. That's where 16-year-old Yoselis Regino Barrios was killed in a drive-by shooting Tuesday morning.
Investigators believe the corner store shooting could be connected to the teen's murder because both happened about one-mile apart in a neighborhood now under intense police patrol.
Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to contact MPD's Command Information Center at 202-727-9099 or text anonymous tips to 50-411.
