Tractor-trailer hits, kills driver on I-95

PRINCE GEORGE, Va. (WUSA9) -- Virginia State Police are investigating a fatal crash on May 22 involving a tractor-trailer.

At 4:40 p.m. on May 22, police responded to a two-vehicle crash in the southbound lanes of I-95 near the 42 mile marker.

Police say a tractor-trailer was traveling southbound on I-95 in the right lane when it ran off the right side of the interstate and struck a 2007 Hyundai Elantra that was parked on the right shoulder.

The driver of the parked Elantra was seated in the passenger side of the vehicle and thrown from the car when it was hit, police say. The tractor-trailer jackknifed in the tree line off the right side of the interstate.

The driver of the Elantra, identified as 24-year-old Rachel E. Gradia of Gainesville, Va., was transported to VCU Medical Center in Richmond where she died two days later.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, 65-year-old Henry W. Vann Jr. of Ahoskie, N.C., was charged with reckless driving. He was not injured in the crash.
