MIDDLETOWN, Md. (WUSA) -- A 4-year-old boy has died after the youth model all-terrain vehicle he was driving crashed and overturned, pinning him under creek water for an undetermined amount of time.

Cpl. Jennifer Bailey of the Frederick County Sheriff's Office said the accident occurred about 7 p.m. Saturday and the child died early Sunday as a result of his injuries. The boy had been driving the ATV by himself on family property in the 6700 block of Burkittsville Road in Frederick County, Cpl. Bailey said.

The boy was flown to the University of Maryland Medical Center after initially being transported to Frederick Memorial Hospital. Police didn't disclose what injuries the child suffered.

Cpl. Bailey said the call from the dispatcher went out as a drowning.

The boy had been riding a Polaris 50cc ATV. The accident is still under investigation.
