WASHINGTON (WUSA) -- The Center for Disease Control says tuberculosis (TB) is spread through the air when a person with TB of the lungs coughs or sneezes.
TB is an infectious disease caused by the bacteria, Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It is found most often in the lungs, but it can occur anywhere in the body.
Tuberculosis is not spread through casual contact like kissing or sharing drinking glasses or dishes.
Hallmark symptoms include a bad cough that lasts longer than three weeks, coughing up blood, an unexplained fever or chest pain.
If you or a family member believes that you could be suffering from TB, call your local health department or emergency department immediately.
