ARLINGTON, Va. (WUSA) -- Prince William County Delegation Bob Marshall has come under fire for saying that children with disabilities are God's punishment for women who abort their first child,.
"It knocked the breath out of me," Maureen Hallman said. Her 21-year-old daughter has cerebral palsy. "She is a gift, the joy of my life."
Marshall made the remarks at a press conference where he spoke out opposing state funding for Planned Parenthood.
Reaction was swift, not only from advocated for the disabled, but Governor Bob McDonnell too.
"I think the comments were wrong and offensive," McDonnell said on WTOP radio.
On his Web site Monday, Marshall said "No one knows me or my record would imagine that I believe or intended to communicate such an offensive notion."
That apology may not be enough. By Tuesday afternoon, 1,541 people have already signed an online petition calling for Marshall's resignation.
