ALEXANDRIA, Va. (WUSA) -- About 350 passengers on two Amtrak trains were stranded for hours Saturday night just south Alexandria.
Amtrak spokesperson Karina Romero said southbound train No. 195 from Boston carrying 111 passengers experienced mechanical difficulty and stopped at about 3:30 p.m. a mile south of Alexandria.
Passengers were without heat for hours, and the train was eventually coupled with another train and resumed travel to Richmond at about 11:30 p.m. Romero said passengers couldn't exit the train during the delay because it was in an isolated, snowy area.
At about 5 p.m., Amtrak attempted to have northbound train No. 92 from Miami render aid to No. 195, but the replacement locomotive failed. By then, Romero said, the legal allowable work time for the crew of No. 92 had expired. Those 239 passengers had to wait about 5 1/2 hours until a new crew took over at 10:30 p.m.
Three other northbound trains were delayed because of the stoppage, Romero said.
