WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA) -- Tens of thousands of people in our region are without power, and the heavy snow is weighing down power lines throughout the region. If your power goes out, don't be left in the dark when it comes to staying safe. We've been in contact with PEPCO, and here's what they're advising:

  • Don't even think about removing trees or limbs from any utility lines. Treat downed wires as if they were live and energized.
  • Prevent carbon monoxide poisoning by using portable generators, pressure washers, grills and other things like that ONLY outdoors and AWAY from doors and windows to keep fumes out.
  • If you've got a heat pump, clear the ice and snow away from the unit so the air can circulate.
  • Communicate with family and friends who are elderly or have special needs to come up with a plan before an outage strikes.
  • Put portable radio, flashlight and batteries in place you can find in the dark.
