GAITHERSBURG, Md. (WUSA)--A firefighter suffered severe burns and six people were left homeless after a two-alarm fire gutted a  two-story home on the 19800 block of Chesley Knoll Drive in Gaithersburg on Saturday morning.

Montgomery County Fire officials say that at approximately 3:06 a.m. they responded to a call for heavy fire at a garage in that location. The fire then extended from the garage to the home and firefighters had to retreat because of the amount of fire and heat.

Montgomery County Fire Assistant Chief Scott Graham told 9NEWS NOW that all six occupants of the house had escaped unharmed but that a firefighter had suffered first- and second-degree burns to his hands and forehead.

Asst. Chief Graham said the firefighter was treated and released but will have to undergo rehabilitation therapy.

Red Cross personnel are helping the displaced residents find shelter.

Asst. Chief Graham said the cause of the fire was electrical failure in the sunroom.
