ALEXANDRIA, Va. (WUSA) -- First Lady Michelle Obama is making good on her promise to visit schools that place a lot of emphasis on health and nutrition.
Wednesday, she and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack handed out fruit to students at Hollin Meadows Elementary. It's one of 61 Fairfax County Schools being recognized for its healthy learning environment.
While some schools have cut back on recess, Hollin Meadows has increased the daily break from 20 to 30 minutes.
"It seems counter intuitive, taking time away from classwork, but we find students return from recess ready to learn," Principal Jon Gates said.
There are 14,000 square feet of outdoor gardens on campus and an outdoor library.
Mrs. Obama says the school is a great example of what can be done, even if resources are limited, to get kids to live healthier.
