WASHINGTON (WUSA) -- What was once Hurricane Ida is now a powerful Nor'easter that is pounding the Mid-Atlantic. High winds along with soggy ground from heavy rains have knocked some trees down, flooded some roads and knocked out some power.
The Nor'easter is moving very slowly and that means we won't see much of a break until mid-day Friday when the steadier rains will start to taper to showers. Temperatures are also unseasonably chilly with highs only in the low to mid 50s Friday.
Winds gusted to 56 mph at Ocean City on Thursday and as high as 75 mph in Oceana , VA. Southeastern Virginia was taking the brunt of the storm. Winds will diminish to less than 20 mph Friday afternoon in the Metro Area and to less than 30 mph at the shore. Southern Maryland may see gusts to near 30 mph through Friday morning. Waves off of the beach resorts were running 19 feet Thursday night and early Friday morning.
Rainfall totals will end up between 4 and 7 inches in southern Maryland and the northern neck of Virginia. Areas to our west, especially out towards the I-81 corridor will see much less wind and rain.
