WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA) --- Officials say DC sex offenders are subject to routine home visits. Whereas, officers did not have the right to enter the house of the convicted rapist in Cleveland, Ohio.
"We go inside the homes of sex offenders on supervision," says Leonard A. Sipes, Jr., Senior Public Affairs Specialist of Court Services and Offender Supervision Agency (CSOSA).
These DC sex offenders face unannounced home visits or "accountability tours" from CSOSA.
"[Metropolitan Police Department] and CSOSA conduct over 11,000 accountability tours of offender homes a year. CSOSA conducts over 37,000 home visits beyond Accountability Tours," says Sipes.
Approximately 500 DC sex offenders are under supervision, Sipes says. Those under supervision undergo drug and polygraph testing, and may also be subject to GPS tracking. Their computers may also be subject to searches for pornography and suspicious material.
The officer must meet face-to-face with offenders no less than once or twice per week, according to Supervisory Community Supervision Officer Paul Brennan: "Sex offenders initially are placed on Intensive or Maximum supervision, depending on their known criminal history, mental health status and past adjustments to community supervision."
Sipes says CSOSA works with MPD to pool intelligence on sex offenders under supervision.
"Approximately half [of DC registered sex offenders] are under our supervision. MPD takes the lead on the 50 percent not under our supervision."
However, Sipes says not all sex offenders on the sex offender registry are under CSOSA supervision.
