RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- As the gubernatorial election nears the home stretch, a slew of Virginia newspapers have endorsed candidates.

On Sunday, Democrat Creigh Deeds picked up the endorsements of the Roanoke Times and the Norfolk Virginian-Pilot.

His opponent, Republican Bob McDonnell, won endorsements from the Richmond Times-Dispatch, the Bristol Herald Courier, the Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star, and the Culpeper Star-Exponent.

The Nov. 3 election, one of two gubernatorial races in the U.S. this year, is being watched for possible national political implications.

President Barack Obama, the first Democrat to win Virginia since Lyndon Johnson, is coming to campaign for Deeds in Norfolk this week.

Deeds trails McDonnell in surveys of likely voters, although the margin is close.
