MCLEAN, Va. (WUSA) -- President Bill Clinton campaigned for Virginia gubernatorial candidate Creigh Deeds in McLean Tuesday. The former president appeared with Deeds at the candidate's McLean headquarters on Colshire Drive. The room was filled with about 200 campaign volunteers and loyal Democrats.
Deeds continues to be down in the polls. One poll has him 8 points behind Republican opponent Bob McDonnell another poll has Deeds as much as 14 points behind.
"Let me tell you, from a man who knows from experience, don't pay any attention to the polls," Terry McAuliffe said to the crowd. Deeds won an upset victory against McAuliffe in the primary. Clinton had backed McAuliffe.
"I tried to help Terry McAuliffe beat Creigh Deeds, and failed," said Clinton.
"Never underestimate this man." Clinton said. He told the crowd that he likes Deeds and respects him for winning. Clinton says he's compared McDonnell's and Deeds' plans on jobs, education and transportation and that Deeds' will actually work.
"My daughter's generation has a saying that denial is not just a river in Egypt, but I think it must be the Virginia Republican Party's platform," said Clinton.
He told the democrats that they needed to work hard to make sure Deeds would be elected."
Paul Miller, a McDonnell supporter said Clinton's appearance demonstrates the Deeds' campaign level of desperation.
The candidates will face off in their final debate tonight at Roanoke College in Salem at 7 p.m. You can watch live on wusa9.com.
