WARRENTON, Va. (WUSA) - Warrenton police are investigating a series of thefts of wallets from grocery carts at various businesses that has cost victims thousands of dollars.
Police said Tuesday the six thefts occurred in September around 4 or 5 p.m., when the stores were busy. A suspect followed a victim around, pretending to shop and then waited for the victim to look elsewhere before stealing a wallet from a purse sitting in the cart. The suspects then immediately left the store, took cash, and went to another store and used the credit cards.
The suspects, three men and one woman, are African American and described by police as professionals. They are believed to be in their late 30s and are well dressed. An older model brown Chevy conversion van might be involved.
Anyone with information is asked to call Warrenton police at 540-347-1100.
