FALLS CHURCH, Va. (WUSA) - No one was injured, but a house in Falls Church was badly damaged when a large tree fell on top of it, on Wednesday. Fairfax county fire-rescue units responded to a call in the 7600 block of Virginia Lane, where the tree had landed on the back side of a home.
Fire officials report one occupant, a young man, was home at the time but fortunately he was not hurt. He was asleep at the time it happened, and could not say for sure if anyone else was home, so fire-rescue crews searched the home and determined no one else was inside. The other two people who live there did come home a short while later.
The impact did serious damage to the home, virtually removing the rear wall of the house. Its not known what caused the tree, which was on a neighboring property, to fall on the house.
Fire-rescue personnel called for representatives of the utility companies to come turn off the electricity and gas service to the home, and a county building inspector was also summoned to the house to inspect the damage and determine if the structural integrity of the home had been compromised. Fire officials tell 9 News Now that the rear portion of the home was condemned but that other parts of the home were deemed safe for occupancy.
