WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA) -- The DC Council, in its first legislative session since summer break, got down to serious business and maybe even some politics.
On Tuesday, the 13 member body approved emergency legislation that would restore the lease between the city and the Southeast Tennis and Learning Center. The move would all but block the Fenty administration from evicting the founder and chief executive of the Tennis and Learning Center, Cora Master's Barry.
Her former husband, Marion Barry, the Ward Eight representative, recused himself from the vote. The Fenty administration claimed when Ms. Barry allowed her organization's corporate status to lapse, they were in violation of their lease terms.
In other moves, the Council voted a $50 million payment to Metro. They restored funds to pay for staff that had been cut by the Fenty administration at the State Board of Education.
The lawmakers also approved new ethics guidelines for themselves; but they denied it had anything to do with Councilman Barry hiring his girlfriend at the city's expense.
Barry told reporters there is nothing new in the code of conduct that hasn't existed for all city employees.
The new ethics guidelines do not stipulate who decides when a member is in violation or what punishment should be dished out.
