(WUSA)-- Scientists at MIT and the Children's Hospital in Boston have launched an app that tracks and reports outbreaks of infectious diseases, such as H1N1 (swine flu).

The application, HealthMap's "Outbreaks Near Me," reports outbreaks locally and alerts users on the phone or by email when new cases are reported nearby, or if they are going into an affected area.

The new application also allows users to report suspected outbreaks themselves and submit photos that document infections.

The 'outbreak app' is available for free from the i-Tunes App Store. You can find more information about it here.
