ROCKVILLE, Md. (WUSA) -- The Montgomery County Humane Society is closing its private rescue. They plan to shut down the facility, but it's not the end of the rescue program.

"This is what we need to do given the current economy," said Cris Bombaugh with the Montgomery County Humane Society.

The Rescue is waiving the adoption fees. Bombaugh says she's also hoping to find foster families for the Rescue Without Walls Program.

"It gives a home-like environment for these animals while they're waiting for their future home," she said.

It's an alternative to the Private Rescue's shelter, which costs upwards of $400,000 a year to operate.

The closing also means Rescue's employees have to find new jobs. Many have, but Javier Baquero is still looking.

"I've loved animals for many, many years, and if there's any chance, I'd like to continue doing that," he said.

For now, he's focusing on getting 23 cats, 6 dogs, and 2 rabbits adopted.

Once every animal has a permanent or foster home, the Private Rescue will close. And they expect it to happen within the next four weeks.
