LAUREL, Md. (WUSA/HCPD) - Howard County police have charged a 28-year-old man with trying to kill his aunt and uncle Monday night in their home in Laurel. Joel Fowler was arrested in front of the house he shared with his relatives in the 8700 block of Teresa Drive shortly after the attack.

Police say Fowler called 911 around 8:50 p.m. to report that his family members were injured. Howard County Officers responded to the scene and found Fowler sitting out front. He was identified as the suspect and placed under arrest.

Police believe Fowler entered the kitchen and struck John and Susan Hellyer with a baseball bat. Both victims were taken to Shock Trauma with head injuries and are in stable condition.

Fowler was charged with two counts of attempted homicide and two counts of first degree assault.
