WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA)--A dog is alive today thanks to a quick thinking DC resident.

According to the Washington Humane Society (WHS), on Friday, August 7, in Southeast, a woman was throwing away garbage in her apartment dumpster on 9th Street. When the woman opened the dumpster door, she saw a bloodied dog's head covered in lacerations.

The woman called the Washington Humane Society (WHS). When WHS Officer Eve Russell arrived, she pulled the dog, now named Trooper, out of the dumpster.

According to WHS Trooper was tightly wrapped in a plastic bag with duct tape. WHS says it appears the dog chewed her way through the plastic bag trying to free herself from the suffocating bag. When Officer Russell found Trooper the dog's head and left leg were exposed.

"A sad reality of the brutality of illegal dog fighting, when the dog who loses the fight is typically disregarded in this inhumane and gruesome manner," says WHS.

After Officer Russell removed Trooper from the bag, her body covered in flies, she says Trooper leaned against her, looked up and gave a slight wag of her tail.

Russell immediately rushed Trooper to Friendship Hospital for Animals in Northwest.

Trooper is in intensive care at the animal hospital; however, the vets say Trooper is recovering nicely and is still friendly as can be.

The Washington Humane Society is offering a $1,500 reward for information leading to the arrest of those responsible for this crime.
